A Million and One Catch Up Moments for Lily

I'm behind, behind, behind.  Gasp!

Couple of big things have happened with Lily in the last month.

First, we registered Lily for Kindergarten!  That was stressful!  Not the actual registration part, but the figuring out all the rest part.  Like before school care.  After school care.  Should we enroll her in the school that's meant for our neighborhood or the school that's actually a tad closer and ranked higher?  But if we do that, what kind of options will we have for before/after school care...  A million and one questions to figure out.  But we did get it figured out.  Whew.

Second, Lily's teacher recently rearranged their class room and Lily's desk was moved further away from the whiteboard.  When that happened Lily's teacher noticed that she was squinting when trying to read words on the board.  When she asked Lily to read a word (it was color words which Lily knows how to read), Lily said she couldn't.  So, off to the eye doctor we went.

Lily did great while there.  Did everything that was asked of her.  Didn't shy away in to herself.  She  even handled it great when I left the room for my own appointment.  The only thing that gave her any pause at all was when the doctor put the drops in her eyes to dilate them.  She didn't much care for that.

The doctor said that her vision is slightly impaired but mostly what's causing the squinting is an astigmatism.  She got a prescription for glasses which the doctor said she didn't have to wear all the time if she didn't want to.  She suggested that we just have Lily leave them at school so she always had them when she needed them to see the whiteboard.  So that's what we've been doing.  But Lily really likes to wear them.  (She's very proud of her pink case.)

Third, we signed Lily up for soccer!  She's had two practices and one game so far.  She seems to like it ok though I am already worried about her willingly sticking it out the whole six game season.

During her first game, she really started to lose interest about half way through.  They play four 10-minute quarters and that just seems too long.  Almost all of the kids were over it before all was said and done.  I have no idea what the score was of her first game, but Lily's team, The Snappers, definitely did not win.   I can't believe I didn't get a picture of Lily before the game.  She looked sooooo stinkin cute.

Lily had two assists!  She should have had two goals, but she has trouble with following the ball after she kicks it.  Both times, she launched the ball at the goal and both times it rolled to a stop practically on the goal line and she just watched it happen.  Both times, one of her teammates ran up and kicked it in.    She played the "goalie" position for one quarter.  She did ok, but she struggled to pay attention the whole time.

After the last practice, prior to her first game, Joel noticed Lily might be losing interest a little, so he promised her if she worked hard at her first game, he would take her for ice cream afterwards.  Bribery at it's finest!  (Also, Tyler is SUCH A STINKER.)

And lastly, I did this interview with Lily around her birthday, but I just never got around to posting it.  I thought it would be fun to try to do these same questions every year.  I imagine I may add questions over time, but for now these seemed age appropriate.

Lily's Hosts a Playdate Party.

Lily has been begging me for probably going on 9 months now to have her friends over.  I have just never made it happen.  Then around Christmas time, it went from just having friends over to having friends spend the night.  Since her requests were escalating from simply friends visiting to friends sleeping over, I thought best to at least give her first request a shot.

I'm not sure what possessed me to ask three of her friends over.  I was playing the odds that surely not all of them would be able to make it since the invitation was kind of last minute.  But they were all available and super excited about it.  None of them had ever had a play date before so the whole concept was new to all 4 of them.

So one afternoon, a few Sundays ago, those girls (plus Tyler) ran all over this house.  Loud and H-Y-P-E-R.  Running from one thing to the next to the next to the next.

I learned that all kids are pretty much created equal in the eating department - as in they all want to have a snack every 5 minutes.  Glad to know it's not just my kids.

They were singing, coloring, playing outside, climbing on Tyler's bunk bed and just generally running amuck for 2 hours.  And then asking when they could do it again.

February.

How do you get the living TV all for the grown ups in the house?  Banish the children to the playroom with a couple beanbag chairs and some popcorn.

Card shark.  Lily knows how to play UNO.  Step one to building myself a Euchre partner.

Lily actually got her teeth cleaned this time.  No meltdown at all.  She did request to be on my lap the whole time but she didn't fuss or fight.  Winner winner chicken dinner!  The following week, I took Tyler for his cleaning and he was not as cooperative.  After about 10 minutes of coaxing, we did get him on my lap and he let the hygienist peek around his mouth but that was it.  Maybe next time.

Hair dos.  Rapunzel style.  Post bath flowers & bows.  Braid waves.  Ballerina bun.

Lily "braided" my hair for me.  Joel attempted to show her the "right" way to which she promptly dismissed him, telling him "Daddy, I KNOW how to braid."

Exercise buddies.

Tyler loves the snow - so much so that he was all set to go out and play by himself once night in the dark.  Joel eventually went out with him.  Tyler was hysterical - making snow angels and trying desperately to make snowballs but the snow was not very sticky and not cooperating very well.

The kids have been begging for a very long time to come and see my work and an opportunity presented itself one afternoon.  It was after 5, which was good because Tyler's "library voice" as we were traipsing through the office is about like mine.  The kids tried out my phone headset - they now thing I have a cool job because I get to sit in my tiny dark cubicle and talk on a headset all day.

A visit to Josh and Marie's always yields presents.  Armor which has hardly been put down since (including sleeping with it in the car and in bed) and a GIANT stuffed horse.
